Biographical / Historical

J. Wentzel van Huyssteen is James I. McCord Professor of Theology and Science Emeritus at Princeton Theological Seminary. Born in South Africa in 1942 and ordained in the Dutch Reformed Church there, he holds an MA in philosophy from the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa, and PhD in philosophical theology from the Free University of Amsterdam. He was professor and chair of religious studies at South Africa's University of Port Elizabeth 1972-1992, when he came to the United States to be Princeton Seminary's first McCord professor. His areas of academic interest include theology and science, interdisciplinary and philosophical theology, and religion and scientific epistemology. Van Huyssteen taught courses on the role of worldviews in theological reflection, theology and the problem of rationality, theology and cosmology, and theology and evolution.

He has served on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Theology and Philosophy, Nederduits Gereformeerde Teologiese Tydskrif, and the Journal of Theology and Science, and has been coeditor of the Science and Religion Series (Ashgate Press). He delivered the Gifford Lectures in 2004, titled “Alone in the World? Science and Theology on Human Uniqueness.”
