This collection consists of news clippings, obituaries, necrology reports, and biographical materials, and published materials by members of Princeton Theological Seminary's class of 1873, of which Peters was a member and for which he served as alumni secretary.

Biographical Information

John E. Peters was born on February 8, 1849 in Newark, New Jersey. He graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1870, and Princeton Seminary in 1873. Mr. Peters engaged in additional studies at Princeton Seminary from 1876 to 1877 and from 1882 to 1883, and at the College of New Jersey from 1882 to 1886. Mr. Peters served the Seminary for many years as alumni secretary for the class of 1873. He corresponded with his classmates frequently and maintained extensive files on each. Mr. Peters collected news clippings, obituaries, necrology reports, and biographical materials on his classmates, as well as copies of their published writings in newspapers, magazines, and journals. He also compiled and collected reports and histories of the class. He pastored churches in New York, New Jersey, and West Virginia, and died in Camden, New Jersey on August 14, 1926.

Processing Information:

These materials were donated to the Seminary Libraries sometime after the 50th reunion of the class of 1873 in 1923. They were stored in the library's "Alumni Alcove" for many years. The gift was noted on an index card found with the collection, dated March 19, 1925. The collection was organized and the original finding aid was written in February of 1996, by Raymond D. Cannata, under the direction of William O. Harris, Archivist. The finding aid was edited by Sarah Seraphin and Daved Anthony Schmidt in June of 2009.
