Scope and Content
The papers of Rev. Birch are contained in two archival boxes and consist primarily of his handwritten sermon manuscripts along with correspondence, photographs, and other personal documents.

Biographical Information
Rev. George Washington Fleming Birch (1837-1902) was born in Pennsylvania. He was educated at Washington College, Western Theological Seminary (1858-1861), and Princeton Theological Seminary (1869-1870). He received honorary degrees from Centre College in Kentucky (D.D., 1885) and West Virginia University (L.L.D., 1895). Rev. Birch was ordained in 1862. He pastored many churches; the Third Presbyterian Church of Springfield, Illinois from 1862 to 1869, Carr Place Church in St. Louis in 1870, Second Presbyterian Church of Lexington, Kentucky from 1870 to 1873, Third Presbyterian Church of Indianapolis, Indiana from 1873 to 1876, and Bethany Presbyterian Church in New York City from 1879 until his death in 1902.
