The J. Gordon Chamberlin Manuscript Collection
Scope and Content
These materials relate to a study conducted by J. Gordon Chamberlin, Professor of Religious Education at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary from 1960 to 1979. The study was concerned with determining the reason for the collapse of national conferences for church education workers, which had been sponsored by the National Council of Churches until 1969. This study was made possible by a grant from the Association of Theological Schools. The study began in 1974, with most of the interviews conducted in 1977. The final report of the study was not published until 1994. This collection includes correspondence, tapes, convention materials, and transcriptions of interviews provided by Chamberlin, including his final report entitled "Church vs. Education: A Battle Lost."
