Scope and Content

This collection contains sermon manuscripts and correspondence by the Reverend Bayless. Most of the letters have also been transcribed, with typescripts enclosed. Several of these letters are written to his parents while he was a student at Princeton and record his personal thoughts on the Seminary.

Biographical Information

The Reverend John Clark Bayless (1819-1875) was born in Louisville, Kentucky. He was educated at Centre College (Kentucky), and Princeton Seminary (class of 1841). He was ordained Evangelist by the Presbytery of Louisville and subsequently served several Presbyterian churches in Kentucky and Indiana as pastor and stated supply. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree by Centre College in 1860.

These papers were given to the Seminary by Mrs. Therese Landsdowne Duble of Sarasota, FL, granddaughter of the Reverend Bayless, sometime around February of 1982. These papers were organized as an Archives manuscript collection in October of 1996.
