The James Greer Manuscript Collection
Scope and Contents
This collection contains the Reverend Greer's manuscript journal maintained in Princeton from March 24, 1840 until December 24, 1842. In it he recorded his personal thoughts and insights on Princeton Seminary. There is also a manuscript sermon on John 12:24-25 in the collection, as well as some theology exam questions of unknown origin.

Biographical / Historical
The Reverend James Greer (1815 - 1890) was born in Pleasant Valley, NY. After graduation from the College of New Jersey [Princeton University] and Princeton Seminary (class of 1843), he was engaged in a long career as a stated supply pastor and a teacher. He served as principal of several private schools and was President of Richmond College (Missouri).

The collection was given to the Seminary by the Reverend Greer's granddaughter, Mrs. A.D. Sams of Clinton, TN, sometime after his death. For many years it was stored and catalogued as a part of the library's "alumni alcove" collection. These papers were organized as an Archives manuscript collection in October of 1996.
