The James Richards Manuscript Collection
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of two volumes of manuscript notes produced by students in Dr. Richards' courses at Auburn Seminary. One of the notebooks belonged to George Randall Shumway, who attended Dr. Richards' lectures on Didactic Theology and Moral Science in 1833. The other notebook gives no indication of its source or date other than that it contains notes on Dr. Richards' lectures on Didactic Theology at Auburn.

Biographical / Historical
The Reverend Doctor James Richards (1767-1843) was born in New Canaan, CT and educated at Yale College, where he studied under Timothy Dwight. He also received an honorary Master of Arts degree from Princeton College and the Doctor of Divinity from Union and Yale Colleges. He was a Presbyterian pastor and author for many years. He also served as Moderator of the General Assembly in 1805. Dr. Richards was Professor of Christian Theology at Auburn Theological Seminary (NY) between 1823 and 1843.

These volumes were acquired in 1990 by Princeton Seminary through a rare books dealer. They were organized as a manuscript collection by the Archives department in October of 1996.
