Biographical / Historical

Justo González, born on August 9, 1937 in Havana, Cuba, is a Cuban American Methodist historian and theologian. He is a notable author and influential contributor to the develpoment of Hispanic theology.

González attended United Seminary in Cuba. Later he received his M.A. from Yale and went on to become the youngest person to receive a doctorate in historical theology at Yale.

González taught at the Evangelical Seminary of Puerto Rico, the Chandler School of Theology of Emory University, Columbia Theological Seminary, and at the Interdenominational Theological Center.

He remains one of the most influential voices in Hispanic theology and has authored numerous works, including The Story of Christianity, A History of Christian Thought, and others, many of which are used as college and seminary textbooks today.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The Justo González papers were donated directly by the creator in 2003. Boxes pertaining to the Hispanic Theological Initiative (HTI) were received after the inital 11 and have been added to this collection.
