Biographical / Historical

Clarence Ransom Comfort, Jr. was born in Maplewood, Mo., on May 27, 1906 to Clarence Ransom Comfort and Dorothy Allison Baxter. He recieved his BA from Westminster College (Fulton, Missouri) in 1928. He later graduated from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1931 with a ThB. He was ordained in the Presbytery of St. Louis on June 15, 1931. In 1947, he recieved the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity from Westminster College.

Comfort served many pastorates in New Jersey as well as in Kentucky and Illinois. He was also a chaplain in the U.S. Air Force during WWII. On May 31, 1932 he married Rebekah Purves Armstrong in Princeton, NJ. They had one son, David Ransom Comfort, born February 28, 1936. Comfort died in Philadelphia, Pa in 1969.

Arrangement

This collection is arranged into two series. Series 1 consists of folders 1 through 122 and contains the papers of C. Ransom Comfort, Jr. Series 2 consists of folders 123, 124, and two yearbooks all pertaining to Comforts spouse, Rebekah Purves Armstrong Comfort. Folders 1 through 91 are arranged by relevent book of the Bible. Folders 92 through 122 are arranged by topic and by date. Folders 123 and 123 are divided into papers and photographs, respectively.
