Biographical / Historical

Myron Lawrence Wheeler was born in West Middlesex, PA on August 23, 1922. He earned degrees from Wheaton College (1944), Princeton Theological Seminary (1949) and Rockhurst University(1980). He served in the U.S. Army Infantry from 1945-46. Wheeler was ordained as a minister of Blue Ridge Presbyterian Church in Raytown, MO. He died in Kansas City, MO on February 3, 2018.

Mary “Beebs” Downing Wheeler was born on August 22, 1921 in Salvador Baia, Brazil and raised in Liberty, MO. She earned degrees from William Jewell College (1941), George Washington University (1944) and The University of Missouri (1970). She worked as a teacher and guidance counselor in the Kansas City region for many years. She died on September 25, 2016 in Kansas City, MO.

Soon after Myron and Mary married, they were jointly commissioned by the Church to become missionaries to the Philippines, where they served from 1949-1951.

This collection has been preserved in its original order. The letters are arranged chronologically in eleven chapters that correspond to different legs of the Wheelers' missionary journey. Each chapter has been housed in a separate folder and each folder is labeled with the original chapter title.
